Becoming a CBRC member requires a few important steps to comply with AMA guidelines and federal regulations. Follow the steps below in order — most can be completed online in under an hour.

1

Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)

AMA membership is required to fly at the CBRC field. Your AMA membership provides liability insurance coverage ($2.5 million), access to AMA safety resources, and advocacy for the hobby at the federal level.

  • Annual membership is available for adults and youth
  • You will receive an AMA member number — keep it handy
  • AMA membership also satisfies the Community Based Organization (CBO) requirement for recreational flyers under FAA rules

Complete the TRUST Safety Test

The TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) is a free, open-book online safety test required by the FAA for all recreational drone and RC aircraft flyers. It covers airspace rules, safety practices, and regulations.

  • The test is free and there is no time limit
  • You may retake it as many times as needed
  • Upon completion, save or print your certificate — you are required to have it available when flying

Register with the FAA

If your aircraft weighs more than 0.55 lbs (250 grams), federal law requires you to register it with the FAA. Registration costs $5 and is valid for 3 years. Your registration number must be marked on each aircraft you fly.

  • Recreational flyers register through the FAA DroneZone
  • One registration number covers all your recreational aircraft
  • You must carry proof of registration when flying
